Reproductive frequency (?) | Iteroparous References (not structured): Morriconi ER, Calvo J, (1989). Alternative reproductive strategies of Ostrea puelchana. Hydrobiologia. Volume 185, Number 3, 195-203 |
Reproductive type (?) | Sexual References: Morriconi ER, Calvo J, (1989). Alternative reproductive strategies of Ostrea puelchana. Hydrobiologia. Volume 185, Number 3, 195-203 Comments: Species are protandric, they demonstrate consecutive rythmic sexuality. Simultaneous hermaphrodites were never found but predominantly male or female gonads, both with developing or resting gametes of the other sex. Ovulation is followed by rapid male maturity and sperm evacuation. |
Developmental trait (?) | Brooding Planktotrophy References: Castro NF, & Le Pennec M, 1988. Modalities of brooding and morphogenesis of larvae in Ostrea puelchana (D'Orbigny) under experimental rearing. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of United Kingdom. Volume 68 (03): 399-407 Morriconi ER, Calvo J, (1989). Alternative reproductive strategies of Ostrea puelchana. Hydrobiologia. Volume 185, Number 3, 195-203 Comments: Reproduction occurs from middle November to middle March, when water temperature exceeds 17°C. O. puelchana has a short breeding period and produces a greater number of embryos of smaller sizes and longer planktonic life. The larva develops two anterior and two posterior denticles during brooding. A comparison with larvae of other species of the genus Ostrea reveals that the main differences among them do not lie so much in the pattern of hinge dentition as in the rate of evolution of the hinge components, which is faster in Ostrea puelchana. This species has fully developed denticles at the time of release, which places the larva of this oyster as particularly evolved within the genus Ostrea. |
