Species | Ensis leei | |
Date of the first record (?) | 2021 References: Anderson R (2022) Presence of Atlantic Jacknife Clam (Enis leei M. Huber) (Mollusca: Pharidae) in Blefast Lough, Co Down. Irish Naturalists’ Journal, 38: 47-48. Comments: Though not reported in the literature, the map in NBN (2021) shows an Irish record for the Foyle (C496246), Londonderry attributed to DAERA (Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs, N. Ireland) Marine Division. A single fresh double valve of Ensis initially attributed to Ensis magnus Schumacher, 1817, was collected on the strandline of a shell-sand beach at Seapark (J402797) near Hollywood, Co. Down on 1 January 2021. |

Pathway / Vector (?) | Unknown References: Anderson R (2022) Presence of Atlantic Jacknife Clam (Enis leei M. Huber) (Mollusca: Pharidae) in Blefast Lough, Co Down. Irish Naturalists’ Journal, 38: 47-48. Comments: The invasive Atlantic Jackknife Clam (Ensis leei M. Huber, 2015), is thought to have been brought to Europe in the ballast water of ships from the east coast of the US. |
Habitat type (?) | Unknown References: Anderson R (2022) Presence of Atlantic Jacknife Clam (Enis leei M. Huber) (Mollusca: Pharidae) in Blefast Lough, Co Down. Irish Naturalists’ Journal, 38: 47-48. Comments: It would seem that E. leei is a very recent arrival in Ireland. It should be looked for in suitable muddy sand habitats in areas of lowered salinity, especially along the east coast of Ireland where a number of apparently suitable bays exist. |
