AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Crangonyx pseudogracilis | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1975 - 1993 References: Minchin, D., Jażdżewski, K. and Anderson, R. (2013) Further range expansions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Irish Naturalists’ Journal 32(1): 13-18. Comments: Crangonyx pseudogracilis (Bousfield ,1958) was first recorded in Ireland from a pond in the Phoenix Park, Dublin (Holmes 1975), and subsequently from aquaria and ornamental garden ponds (O’Connor et al. 1991). It was later found at the eastern end of the Grand Canal (Reynolds 1993) |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References: Minchin, D., Jażdżewski, K. and Anderson, R. 1991). It was later found at the eastern end of the Grand Canal (Reynolds 1993). It has also been found in Cos Cork and Galway (McCarthy and McLoughlan 1993) apparently remote from earlier introductions. In 1993 the species was found in Lough Neagh in Co. Antrim and the River Main draining into it, later that year, in Lower Lough Erne, Co. Fermanagh (Dick 1994), and then elsewhere in Northern Ireland (Anderson 1995). C. pseudogracilis was also found in Cos Wicklow, Kildare and Meath and recorded from the Blessington Reservoir and the River Liffey in Cos Wicklow, Kildare and Dublin |

Source region (?) | Unknown References: Minchin, D., Jażdżewski, K. and Anderson, R. (2013) Further range expansions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Irish Naturalists’ Journal 32(1): 13-18. Comments: Costello (1993) quotes H.B.N. Hynes who suggested that the arrival in Ireland was due to American ships discharging bilge water [most probably this was ballast water] released into the River Bann during World War 1. It was claimed that it reached Belfast by canal and from there ultimately arrived in Britain where Sexton (1939) later found and described it |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Unknown References: Minchin, D., Jażdżewski, K. and Anderson, R. (2013) Further range expansions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Irish Naturalists’ Journal 32(1): 13-18. Comments: The association of C. pseudogracilis with ponds in Cos Cork and Galway (Lynch 1994), and previous findings in an ornamental pond by Holmes (1975), strongly implicate ornamental plants in its expansion. However, it may have spread from the Erne navigation or via the Grand Canal to the Shannon Navigation, with flooding of infested ponds or by unintentional releases. The many pathways probably include natural dispersal mechanisms. |
Habitat type (?) | Lake Pond River References: Minchin, D., Jażdżewski, K. and Anderson, R. (2013) Further range expansions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References: Minchin, D., Jażdżewski, K. and Anderson, R. (2013) Further range expansions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Irish Naturalists’ Journal 32(1): 13-18. Comments: The dominance of both North American species in our collected material shows a trend of a replacement of native by alien amphipods |
