AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Rangia cuneata | |
Date of the first record (?) | 2017 References: Kerckhof, F., Devleeschouwer, M., Hamers, N., 2018. De Amerikaanse brakwaterstrandschelp Rangia cuneata (G. B. Sowerby, 1832) aangetroffen in Frankrijk. De Strandvlo 37, 141–145. Comments: We report the find of many fresh valves of Rangia cuneata (length between 3.5 and - 5 cm) collected on the banks of the Canal de Caen, Normandy, France on the 9th of August 2017. This find suggests the presence of a population in the Canal. The discovery of Rangia in this brackish water canal did not come as a surprise as the environmental characteristics are suitable for this species and also given its rapid expansion in northwest European brackish waters, including the Baltic, after its first discovery in the harbour of Antwerpen in 2005. |
