Species | Dikerogammarus villosus | |
Date of the first record (?) | 2015 References: Šidagytė E, Solovjova S, Šniaukštaitė V, Šiaulys A, Olenin S, Arbačiauskas K (2016) The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) invades Lithuanian waters, South-Eastern Baltic Sea. Oceanologia (in press) Comments: The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus was recorded for the first time in Lithuanian waters in 2015. The species was detected in three sites in the Curonian Lagoon (on two buoys in the lagoon strait and the harbour, and one littoral sampling site) and in the mouth of the Šventoji River |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Lithuania LME: 23. Baltic Sea References: Šidagytė E, Solovjova S, Šniaukštaitė V, Šiaulys A, Olenin S, Arbačiauskas K (2016) The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) invades Lithuanian waters, South-Eastern Baltic Sea. Source region (?) | LME: 62. Black Sea --> LME sub-region: Azov Sea --> LME sub-region: Black Sea LME: A2. Caspian Sea --> LME sub-region: Caspian Sea References: Minchin, J. D., Arbačiauskas, K., Daunys, D., Ezhova, E., Grudule, N., Kotta, J., ... & Strake, S. (2019). Rapid expansion and facilitating factors of the Ponto-Caspian invader Dikerogammarus villosus within the eastern Baltic Sea. Aquatic invasions, 165-181. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Highly likely Pathway: Vessels Vector: (Possible) Anchor and anchor chain Vector: (Highly likely) Ballast water Vector: (Possible) Sea chest Vector: (Highly likely) Ship’s hull References: Šidagytė E, Solovjova S, Šniaukštaitė V, Šiaulys A, Olenin S, Arbačiauskas K (2016) The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) invades Lithuanian waters, South-Eastern Baltic Sea. Oceanologia (in press) Comments: The species presence in the buoy fouling suggests the involvement of shipping in species introduction. Most likely D. villosus has arrived to the Curonian Lagoon with commercial ships, while the invasion into the mouth of the Šventoji River may be associated with leisure shipping as the port situated therein is not currently functioning. |
Habitat type (?) | Estuary Lagoon Marina Ports River References: Šidagytė E, Solovjova S, Šniaukštaitė V, Šiaulys A, Olenin S, Arbačiauskas K (2016) The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) invades Lithuanian waters, South-Eastern Baltic Sea. Oceanologia (in press) Comments: In the Curonian Lagoon, the species was detected on two (out of five studied) navigation buoys located in the strait and the port in the Malkų Bay. From the three littoral sites sampled in the Curonian Lagoon, D. villosus was detected only in one site located close to Juodkrantė Town. In the Šventoji River, D. villosus was present in the mouth and absent from the other two upstream study sites. |

Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered References: Šidagytė E, Solovjova S, Šniaukštaitė V, Šiaulys A, Olenin S, Arbačiauskas K (2016) The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) invades Lithuanian waters, South-Eastern Baltic Sea. Oceanologia (in press) |

Salinity range (?) | Venice system: 1. Limnetic [<0.5psu] 2. β-Oligohaline [0.5-3psu] 3. α-Oligohaline [3-5psu] 4. β-Mesohaline [5-10psu] Comments: In all three sites where species was found salinity is changing irregularly (depending on the inflows from the Baltic Sea) from nearly fresh water to max 8 psu |

Ports | Port #1/2: Klaipeda Date of the first record: 2015 Salinity range (psu): 0 - 7.9 Temperature range (C): 0 - 23 Population status: Established References: Šidagytė et al 2015 Port #2/2: Sventoji Date of the first record: 2015 Salinity range (psu): 0 - 5 Population status: Not entered References: Šidagytė et al 2017 Comments: In the Šventoji River, D. villosus was present in the mouth and absent from the other two upstream study sites (Šidagytė et al 2017). Salinity estimation (expert judgment): there are sporadic inflows of the Baltic Sea (salinity about 7-8 psu) into the small estuary of the river, but no instrumental measurements |
