Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References: Kownacka J, Edler L, Gromisz S, Łotocka M, Olenina I, Ostrowska M, Piwosza K (2013) Non-indigenous species Chaetoceros cf. lorenzianus Grunow 1863 – a new, predominant component of autumn phytoplankton in the southern Baltic Sea. Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, V. 119: 101–111 Comments: In the Baltic Sea region, C. lorenzianus was known only from the entrance area - the Kattegat and Belt Sea, where it occurs from late summer to late winter (Sundström, 1973; Jensen and Moestrup, 1998; Hällfors, 2004). There are no previous observations of C. lorenzianus from the southern, central or northern part of the Baltic Sea. The status of the species is unclear, however there are at least four criteria of non-indigenous spp which are applicable for the case of Chaetoceros cf. lorenzianus: 1) a new arrival of a conspicuous species; 2) a discontinuity in the known distribution of a species; 3) a highly localized distribution in an area adjacent to the recognized pathways (e.g., in ports, marinas, etc.); 4) recent expansion in the range of a highly localized species, where natural dispersal alone is insufficient to explain its current distribution |
