Species | Caprella mutica | |
Date of the first record (?) | 2012 - 2013 References (not structured): Almón, B., Pérez, J., Bañón, R., Trigo, J. (2014) First record of Caprella mutica from the Iberian Peninsula: expansion southwards in European waters. Marine Biodiversity Records, 7: e30. Comments: In October 2012, C. mutica was seen for the first time in Illa de Arousa (Galicia, north-west Spain), established around bateas, floating structures intended for shellfish farming. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Spain LME: 25. Iberian Coastal References (not structured): Almón, B., Pérez, J., Bañón, R., Trigo, J. (2014) First record of Caprella mutica from the Iberian Peninsula: expansion southwards in European waters. Marine Biodiversity Records, 7: e30. Source region (?) | Country: Russia --> LME: 50. Sea of Japan / East Sea; LME sub-region: Sea of Japan References (not structured): Cook E.J., Jahnke M., Kerchof F., Minchn D., Faasse M., Boos K. and Ashton G. (2007) European expansion of the introduced amphipod Caprella mutica Schurin 1935. Aquatic Invasions, 2, 411–421. Comments: Is indigenous to sub-boreal waters of north-east Asia (Peter the Great Bay, Vladivostok, Russia). |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Natural spread from neighboring countries Vector: Other natural vectors Pathway: Natural spread, long distances Vector: Anthropogenic flotsam Pathway: Vessels Vector: Ship’s hull Pathway: Wild fisheries Vector: Fishing gear References (not structured): Cook E.J., Jahnke M., Kerchof F., Minchn D., Faasse M., Boos K. and Ashton G. (2003) The distribution of littoral caprellids (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidea) along the Pacific coast of continental Chile. Revista Chilena de Historia Natural, 76, 297–312. Comments: The vector used by C.mutica to colonize new areas is not well understood, although it is suspected that it is more likely to be via commercial and recreational shipping, rather than by the stock movement of cultured species. It has also been suggested that both, artificial buoyant (buoys, ropes and garbage) and natural materials (seaweed) may facilitate the dispersal of the species. |
Habitat type (?) | Aquaculture sites Estuary Marina References (not structured): Almón, B., Pérez, J., Bañón, R., Trigo, J. (2014) First record of Caprella mutica from the Iberian Peninsula: expansion southwards in European waters. Marine Biodiversity Records, 7: e30. Comments: C. mutica was recently found by SCUBA-divers in Galician waters (north-west Spain) at 6 different man-made floating structures along Ría de Arousa. In October 2012, C. mutica was seen for the first time in Illa de Arousa (Galicia, north-west Spain), established around bateas, floating structures intended for shellfish farming. |

Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic: Sublittoral within photic zone Supralittoral Substratum: Artificial (manmade) References (not structured): Almón, B., Pérez, J., Bañón, R., Trigo, J. (2014) First record of Caprella mutica from the Iberian Peninsula: expansion southwards in European waters. Marine Biodiversity Records, 7: e30. Comments: The first aggregations of C. mutica were found in October 2012 in a shellfish batea located in Illa de Arousa. Afterwards, the species was also found within a floating fish farm. C. mutica was subsequently found in shellfish bateas in Santa Uxía de Ribeira, Pobra do Caramiñal and Palmeira, all located on the north shore of Ría de Arousa. Recently it has also been detected in the marina of Santa Uxía de Ribeira. The depth-range for the specimens was between 2 and 15 m in all cases. |

Population status (?) | Unknown (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Almón, B., Pérez, J., Bañón, R., Trigo, J. (2014) First record of Caprella mutica from the Iberian Peninsula: expansion southwards in European waters. Marine Biodiversity Records, 7: e30. Comments: Assessing the extent of the invasion will require large sampling efforts and the collaboration of the different sectors involved, as well as the scientific community and the regional administration. This is instrumental to assess the extent of the invasion and its impacts, as well as to minimize its possible influence on both natural and human made ecosystems. |
