Species | Bugulina simplex | |
Date of the first record (?) | 2011 References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: It was first collected from the Bangor Marina in August 2011 By J. Porter. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Porter JS, Nunn JD, Ryland JS, Minchin D, Spencer Jones ME (2017) The status of non-native bryozoans on the north coast of Ireland. BioInvasion Records 6(4): 321-330. Porter JS, Nunn JD, Ryland JS, Minchin D, Spencer Jones ME (2017) The status of non-native bryozoans on the north coast of Ireland. BioInvasion Records 6(4): 321-330. Comments: It was first recorded from collections from the Bangor Marina on the south side of Belfast Lough. It has distinctive yellow-orange tufts. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown Comments: The species may have been widely distributed at an earlier time. The lack of records from Ireland may reflect the poor study of this taxonomic group. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Vessels Vector: Ship’s hull References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: May have been distributed by small craft and ships as the species was found in port regions and at marina sites or on pontoons servicing small craft. In northern Ireland the sites where the species was found in 2012 were: Rathlin Island pontoon, Ballycastle, Glenarm, Carrickfergus and Bangor marinas. |
Habitat type (?) | Marina Sheltered coastal area References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: All sites where this has been found were within sheltered localities. However, the species may occur over a wider range of habitats. |
|
Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: All known sites are in sheltered conditions |

Population status (?) | Common (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: Its relative widespread distribution in Ireland would suggest that it is an established species. |

Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Ryland JS (1958) Bugula simplex Hincks, a newly recognized polyzoan from British waters. Nature (London) 181: 1148–1149. Porter JS, Nunn JD, Ryland JS, Minchin D, Spencer Jones ME (2017) The status of non-native bryozoans on the north coast of Ireland. BioInvasion Records 6(4): 321-330. De Blauwe, H.; Faasse, M. (2001). Extension of the range of the Bryozoans Tricellaria inopinata and Bugula simplex in the north-east Atlantic ocean (Bryozoa: Cheilostomatida). Ned. Faunist. Meded. 14: 103-112 Comments: The species was first described from the Adriatic Sea in 1886 where it was also known as B. sabatieri. Ryland et al. (2011) believe the species to be Mediterranean in origin. Since then it has been recorded in Australia and New Zealand and the Atlantic coast of North America and only more recently found in the north-east Atlantic region. It was first recorded in Britain more than fifty years ago from south Wales in the warm power-station water entering the Milford Docks (Ryland, 1958) and subsequently from North Wales in Holyhead Harbour. More recently has been recorded from south-western England and from the west coast of Scotland. It is known from the Dutch coast where it is seasonally abundant, during August and September, at marinas. It is also known from Belgium and Brittany (Ryland et al., 2011). |
