AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Perophora japonica | |
Date of the first record (?) | 2012 References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Minchin D, Nunn J, Picton B (2016) The most northern records of the exotic ascidian, Perophora japonica Oka, 1927 (Ascidiacea: Perophoridae) in the north-east Atlantic. BioInvasion Records, 5(3): 139-142. Comments: First recorded in August 2012 attached to holdfasts of kelp and has been recorded to 24m in the narrows of Carlingford Lough. These are the most northerly accounts of the species in the NE Atlantic at this time |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. Comments: Found attached to the holdfasts of Saccharina latissima at a marina site and subsequently from shore surveys in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland at the Sketrick and Rainey narrows. |

Source region (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Baldock B, Bishop JDD (2001) Occurrence of the non-native ascidian Perophora japonica in the Fleet, southern England. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 81: 1067. Comments: Previously known in Europe from the Fleet and Plymouth Sound on the south coast of Britain. The species might have been introduced from the south coast of Britain or it may have been a separate inoculation to Ireland. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Vessels Vector: Ship’s hull References (not structured): Arenas FF, Bishop JDD, Carlton JT, Dyrynda PJ, Farnham WF, Gonzalez DJ, Jacobs MW, Lambert C, Lambert G, Nielsen SE, Pederson JA, Porter JS, Ward S, Wood CA (2006) Alien species and other notable records from a rapid assessment survey of marinas on the south coast of England. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 86: 1329–1337. Comments: Might have been introduced on leisure craft as some of the localities it was found were at marinas. |
Habitat type (?) | Marina Sheltered coastal area Strait/Sound References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered References (not structured): Baldock B, Bishop JDD (2001) Occurrence of the non-native ascidian Perophora japonica in the Fleet, southern England. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 81: 1067. Comments: The sites where this stoloniferous tunicate was found were in areas where there was normal sea water and either associated with floating pontoons of a marina or occurring on the low shore in areas where there were tidal currents. |

Compte Rendu de la Société de Biogéographie, 61(3): 111-116. Comments: First recorded in Britain in 1999 and subsequently in the Fleet and in 2003 was reported from Guernsey. It was first recognised in The Netherlands in 2004 and it was more frequently recorded in the following year. It occurred earlier in France at marina sites and associated with Sargassum muticum along the Channel. The species is native to Japan and Korea. |
