Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Relini G (1980) Guide per il riconoscimento delle specie animali delle acque lagunari e costiere italiane AQ/1/91. 2. Cirripedi Toracici. Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Genova: 120 pp. Zullo VA (1992) Balanus trigonus Darwin (Cirripedia, Balaninae) in the Atlantic basin: an introduced species? Bulletin of Marine Science, 50 (1): 66-74. Kerckhof F (2002) Barnacles (Cirripedia, Balanomorpha) in Belgian waters, an overview of the species and recent evolutions, with emphasis on exotoc species. Bulletin de l'institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique 72: 93-104. Comments: Found in tropical and warm seas. It is known from the Mediterranean Sea and on the Atlantic Iberian coast. Zullo suggests the species was introduced to the south Atlantic from the Indian and Pacific oceans and then brought to the central and northern Atlantic by whaling vessels. It was not known from the Mediterranean Sea until the 1920s (Kerckhof, 2002) |
