AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Rapana venosa | |
Date of the first record (?) | 2005 References (not structured): Mann R, Occhipinti A, Harding JM (eds) (2004) Alien Species Alert: Rapana venosa (veined whelk). ICES Cooperative Research Report No. 264. Kerckhof F, Vink R, Nieweg DC, Post JNJ (2006) The veined whelk Rapana venosa has reached the North Sea. Aquatic Invasions 1(1): 35-37. Comments: A shell was recovered from the North Sea in 1992 approximately 30km south of the Digger Bank. However, confirmation of the species was not undertaken and so this record has been dismissed. Further specimens offshore collected in 2005 were reported by Kerckhof (2006) and one of these was reported from British waters. There would appear to have been several captured by a trawler but were not all seen. It is unclear whether there is a viable population in this region or not. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: United Kingdom (Britain) LME: 22. North Sea |

Source region (?) | Ocean: Arctic Ocean: Pacific --> Ocean region: NW Pacific --> Ocean region: W Tropical Pacific |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Unknown |
Habitat type (?) | Offshore References (not structured): Mann R, Harding JM (2000) Invasion of the North American Atlantic coast by a large predatory Asian mollusc. Biological Invasions 2:7-22 Comments: The current record for the North Sea is offshore but the species is normally found in estuarine areas and in sheltered coastal areas. |

Wave exposure (?) | Exposed References (not structured): Kerckhof F, Vink R, Nieweg DC, Post JNJ (2006) The veined whelk Rapana venosa has reached the North Sea. Aquatic Invasions 1(1): 35-37 Comments: The specimens were captured offshore and in |

Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic: Littoral (Benthic) Sublittoral within photic zone Substratum: Artificial (manmade) Biogenic (living or nonliving) Hard (cobbles to bedrock) Soft (mud to pebbles) References (not structured): Savini D, Occhipinti-Ambrogi A (2006) Consumption rates and prey preference of the invasive gastropod Rapana venosa in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Helgoland Marine Research 60(2):153-159 Comments: Found on soft substrat in the North Sea. The species requires hard surfaces to which the egg cases are attached. Breakwaters, rocks, stones and artifical surfaces provide such substrata. |
