Species | Palaemon macrodactylus
Date of the first record (?) | 1992 References (not structured): Ashelby CW, Worsfold TM, Fransen CHJM (2004) First records of the oriental prawn Palaemon macrodactylus (Decapoda: Caridea) an alien species in European waters with a revised key to British Palaemonidae. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 84: 1041-1050, Udekem d'Acoz C, Faasse M, Dumoulin E, De Blauwe H (2005) The occurrence of the Asian shrimp in the southeast bight of the North Sea, with a key to the palaemonidae of north-western Europe (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea. Netherlands Faunist Meded 22: 95-112. Ashelby CW (2005) The occurrence and distribution of non-native fauna in Harwich Harbour and the Stour and Orwell estuaries, including new records of Caprella mutica Schurin 1935 and Bugula stolonifera Ryland 1960. Essex Naturalist 22: 102-116. Comments: It is presumed that this is the seminal record in Northern Europe as the next accounts are from Begium, The Netherlands and France in 2004. However, this is uncertain. It was first found and recognised in 2001. It might have arrived between June 2000 and December 2001. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: United Kingdom (Britain) LME: 22. North Sea References (not structured): Ashelby CW, Worsfold TM, Fransen CHJM (2004) First records of the oriental prawn Palaemon macrodactylus (Decapoda: Caridea) an alien species in European waters with a revised key to British Palaemonidae. Essex Naturalist 22: 102-116. Comments: The first record of this species is from the Stour Estuary. Ashelby et al 2013 state that the 1st EU record is from the Thames estuary in 1992. ASHELBY CW, DE GRAVE S, JOHNSON MJ 2013. The global invader Palaemon macrodactylus (decapoda, palaemonidae): an interrogation of records and a synthesis of data. Crustaceana 86(5), 594-624. Source region (?) | Unknown |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Natural spread from neighboring countries Vector: Water currents Pathway: Vessels Vector: Ballast water References (not structured): Ashelby CW, Worsfold TM, Fransen CHJM (2004) First records of the oriental prawn Palaemon macrodactylus (Decapoda: Caridea) an alien species in European waters with a revised key to British Palaemonidae. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 84: 1041-1050, Comments: The mode of arrival is unknown but it is likely that its arrival to Britain is either by current movements from northern continental Europe or perhaps evolving from the release of ballast water directly to a port such as Felixstowe. |
Habitat type (?) | Estuary Lagoon Marina References (not structured): Lavesque N, Bachelet G, Beguer M, Girardin M, Lepage M, Blanchet H, Sorbe J-C, Moderan J, Sauriau P-G, Auby I (2010) Recent expansion of the oriental shrimp Palaemon macrodactylus (Crustacea: Decapoda) on the western coasts of France. Salinity range (?) | Venice system: 2. β-Oligohaline [0.5-3psu] 3. α-Oligohaline [3-5psu] 4. β-Mesohaline [5-10psu] 5. α-Mesohaline [10-18psu] References (not structured): Born JW (1968) Osmoregulatory capacities of two caridean shrimps, Syncaris pacifica (Atyidae) and Palaemon macrodactylus (Palaemonidae). Biological Bulletin, 159:177-192. Comments: This species is a strong osmoregulator. In San Francisco Bay, US, the upstream limit of its range has been noted as 1PSU, the downstream limit being set by prey availability. |

Temperature range (?) | Min: 2 Max: 26 References (not structured): Newman WA (1963) On the introduction of an edible oriental shrimp (Caridea, Palaemonidae) to San Francisco Bay. Crustaceana, 5:119-132. Comments: Can be maintained in captivity for extended periods between 14 and 26°C. |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic and Pelagic: Sublittoral within photic zone Substratum: Soft (mud to pebbles) |

Reproductive duration (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Ashelby CW (2005)The occurrence and distribution of non-native fauna in Harwich Harbour and the Stour and Orwell estuaries, including new records of Caprella mutica Schurin 1935 and Bugula stolonifera Ryland 1960. Comments: Would appear to be breeding productively. In the native range, each age group produces at least two cohorts per year. Under controlled laboratory conditions entailing a raised temperature and hence an extended breeding season, this can be increased to 5 - 9 cohorts.
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Apr. May Jun. Jul. Aug. Sept. Oct. References (not structured): Omori M, Chida Y, 1988a. Life history of the caridean shrimp Palaemon macrodactylus with special reference to the difference in reproductive features among ages. Nippon Suisan Gakkaishi, 54(3):365-375. Comments: In Japan, the breeding season was noted as being mid-April to early October. At present, the breeding season is unknown for the North Sea. |
