AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Hydroides elegans | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1937 References (not structured): Zibrowius H. Thorp CH. 1989. A review of the alien serpulid and spirorbid polychaetes in the British Isles. Cahiers de Biologie Marine 30: 271-285 Comments: Found in 1937. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: United Kingdom (Britain) LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: English Channel References (not structured): Zibrowius H. Thorp CH. 1989. A review of the alien serpulid and spirorbid polychaetes in the British Isles. Cahiers de Biologie Marine 30: 271-285 Comments: Was originally found in the Shoreham Harbour Canal near a power station warm water outflow in Sussex but this canal now no longer exists. |

Source region (?) | Not entered |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Vessels Vector: Ship’s hull References (not structured): Newell GE (1954) The marine fauna of Whitstable. Annals and Magazine of Natural History 12(7): 321-350. Comments: Newell found specimens on the hull of a boat be believed to be Hydroides norwegica carried on the hull of a boat coming from Ramsgate but subsequent study of the samples showed the museum specimens to be H. elegans. The species seemed to have survived in Britain in areas where there is confined water as in behind dock gates or in a canal. |

Population status (?) | Unknown (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Bryan PJ, Kreider JL, Qian P-Y (1998) Settlement of the serpulid polychaete Hydroides elegans (Haswell) on the arborescent bryozoan Bugula neritina (L.): evidence of a chemically mediated releationship. Handbook of the marine fauna of north-west Europe. Oxford University Press, Oxford, England. 800pp. Newell GE (1954) The marine fauna of Whitstable. Annals and Magazine of Natural History 12(7): 321-350. Comments: It is not clear whether the species survives in British waters. It was also noted near to Ramsgate Harbour in Kent on the south-east coast of Britain, where it is thought to have reproduced. This tubeworm has been noted to be associated with the bryozoan Bugula neritina elsewhere |

Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Zibrowius H. Thorp CH. 1989. A review of the alien serpulid and spirorbid polychaetes in the British Isles. Cahiers de Biologie Marine 30: 271-285 Comments: Its original natural range remains unknown but it is an introduction to British waters. The species is normally confined tropical and warm temperate zones |
