AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Heterosigma akashiwo | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1970 - 1976 References (not structured): Original publication: Hara, Y. & Chihara, M. (1987). Morphology, ultrastructure and taxonomy or the Raphidophycean alga Heterosigma akashiwo. Botanical Magazine, Tokyo 100: 151-163. Smayda T.J. (2006) Scientific review on the nature and origins of harmful algal blooms in Scotland. Harmful algal bloom communities in Scottish coastal waters: relationship to fish farming and regional comparisons, a review: paper 2006/3 The Scottish Government. Dunne, T. 1984. Observations on a bloom of flagellate "X" in the west of Ireland. ICES (Copenhagen), special meeting CM/D12. Comments: Originally known as 'flagellate x' and responsible for fish kills in a fish farm on the west coast of Ireland in Clifden Bay in the 1970s. Similar events are known from other world regions. The taxonomy of the species, on account of its small size, has been posing changes in its nomenclature and its resemblance to Olisthodiscus luteus and Chattonella sp. may have caused some confusion in the past. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas Comments: Initiallyecorded as 'flagellate x' in coastal bays where there were fish farm kills on the west coast of Ireland and later in Mulroy Bay on the north coast of Ireland. |

Population status (?) | Established (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Pybus C, McGrath D (1992) Large scale Phaseocystis blooms off the west coast of Ireland in 1990. Irish Fisheries Investigations Series B (Marne): No 39. 12pp. Anon (1989) Annual Fisheries Report for 1986. The Stationary Office, Dublin. Comments: The first account was of a bloom in Clifden Bay in the 1970s, at a time when many caged salmon died. Blooms recorded in Mulroy Bay in 1985 and 1986 are rferred to in the account by Pybus and McGrath. Allso known from the coast of Mayo in the late 1980s. |

Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References (not structured): Gittenberger, A., Rensing, M., Stegenga, H. & Hoeksema, B. (2010). Gomez F (2008) Phytoplankton invasions: comments on the validity of categorizing the non-indigenous dinoflagellates and diatoms in European seas. Marine Pollution Bulletin 56:620-628. Comments: Gomez in his critique does not refer to this species. While considered to be non-indigenous by some, because of the sudden appearance of blooms events, Gomez points of view, for some of the other species he referes to in his paper, might also be applied to H. akashiwo. |
