Source region (?) | Country: France --> LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf Country: United Kingdom (Britain) --> LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf; LME sub-region: English Channel Country: USA --> LME: 55. Beaufort Sea; LME sub-region: Beaufort Sea References (not structured): Breber P., 2002. Introduction and acclimatisation of the Pacific Carpet Clam, Tapes philippinarum, to Italian Waters. Invasive aquatic species of Europe - distribution, impact and management. Leppäkoski, E., S. Gollasch & S. Olenin (eds). Dordrecht, Boston, London. Kluwer Academic Publishers: 120-126. Comments: Ruditapes philippinarum was accidentally introduced on the Pacific coast of the USA in the 1930s; then it became a commercial species and it is now bred in hatcheries. It was then imported in Atlantic Europe (1970's-1980's). The seed for Italian cultures came from hatcheries in the UK, USA, France and Spain (1983-1987). By 1989 wild seed was being gahered in quantities enough to supply the parcs so that importation from abroad stopped. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Pathway: Culture activities Vector: Intercontinental stock movement Vector: Regional stock movement References (not structured): Breber P., 2002. Introduction and acclimatisation of the Pacific Carpet Clam, Tapes philippinarum, to Italian Waters. Invasive aquatic species of Europe - distribution, impact and management. Leppäkoski, E., S. Gollasch & S. Olenin (eds). Dordrecht, Boston, London. Kluwer Academic Publishers: 120-126. Bartoli M, Nizzoli D, Viaroli P, Turolla E, Castaldelli G, Fano EA, Rossi R, 2001. Impact of Tapes philippinarum farming on nutrient dynamics and benthic respiration in the Sacca di Goro. Hydrobiologia 455: 203-212. Comments: Italy is the largest producer of clams in the European Community (Bartoli et al., 2001). Cultured clams proved able to spread from the areas where it was cultured at the rate of 30km a year. But it was truly invasive only in lagoons. |
Habitat type (?) | Estuary Lagoon Open coast Ports References (not structured): Breber P., 2002. Introduction and acclimatisation of the Pacific Carpet Clam, Tapes philippinarum, to Italian Waters. Invasive aquatic species of Europe - distribution, impact and management. Leppäkoski, E., S. Gollasch & S. Olenin (eds). Dordrecht, Boston, London. Kluwer Academic Publishers: 120-126. Comments: The species prefers lagoons and estuaries. It also settles in harbours and in the lee of breakwaters (common in the Northern Adriatic coastline) |

Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered References (not structured): Breber P., 2002. Introduction and acclimatisation of the Pacific Carpet Clam, Tapes philippinarum, to Italian Waters. Invasive aquatic species of Europe - distribution, impact and management. Leppäkoski, E., S. Gollasch & S. Olenin (eds). Dordrecht, Boston, London. Kluwer Academic Publishers: 120-126. |

Salinity range (?) | Exact range: 15 - 50 References (not structured): Breber P., 2002. Introduction and acclimatisation of the Pacific Carpet Clam, Tapes philippinarum, to Italian Waters. Invasive aquatic species of Europe - distribution, impact and management. Leppäkoski, E., S. Gollasch & S. Olenin (eds). Dordrecht, Boston, London. Kluwer Academic Publishers: 120-126. Comments: At 21°C the larvae live and grow in salinities from 12 to 32 psu, but optimal growth and survival are recorded within the range of 20-28 psu. The clams can escape very low salinities (<5) by lying deep in the sediment. |

Temperature range (?) | Min: 6 Max: 30 References (not structured): Breber P., 2002. Introduction and acclimatisation of the Pacific Carpet Clam, Tapes philippinarum, to Italian Waters. Invasive aquatic species of Europe - distribution, impact and management. Leppäkoski, E., S. Gollasch & S. Olenin (eds). Dordrecht, Boston, London. Kluwer Academic Publishers: 120-126. Comments: Fastest growth is observed at 15°C |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic: Littoral (Benthic) Substratum: Artificial (manmade) Soft (mud to pebbles) References (not structured): Breber P., 2002. Introduction and acclimatisation of the Pacific Carpet Clam, Tapes philippinarum, to Italian Waters. Invasive aquatic species of Europe - distribution, impact and management. Leppäkoski, E., S. Recruitment of Tapes philippinarum in the Venice lagoon (Italy) during 2002-2007. Aquaculture International 19:541-554. Comments: The species prefer sheltered areas, like the lee of artificial brekwaters (common along the Northern Adriatic coastline). Sediment type affects juvenile settlement: sandy bottoms show densities 2-3 times higher than muddy bottoms (Pellizzato et al., 2011) |
