Species | Pleurosigma simonsenii | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1974 References (not structured): Wolff WJ (2005) Non-indigenous marine and estuarine species in The Netherlands. Zool Meded Leiden 79:1–116 (and references therein). |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Netherlands LME: 22. North Sea References (not structured): Wolff WJ (2005) Non-indigenous marine and estuarine species in The Netherlands. Zool Meded Leiden 79:1–116 (and references therein). Comments: Status in The Netherlands: Exotic non-indigenous species (criteria 1, 2, 4), temporarily established. Vector: Unknown how it reached Atlantic Europe. Assumed to have arrived in The Netherlands by marine currents. Area of origin: Was described from the Indian Ocean by Simonsen in 1974 (Eno et al., 1997) Introduction into Atlantic Europe: In Europe it was first found near Ushant (=Ouessant), France, in 1966, but not immediately identified. Later it was found near Plymouth in 1972, 1973, and 1974 where it was the dominant species in the net phytoplankton (Boalch & Harbour, 1977) Introduction into The Netherlands: Kat (1982a) described the species as occurring along the Dutch coast in November 1974. She nor Leewis (1985) found the species since then. Present occurrence in The Netherlands: Apparently absent. |
