AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Ensis leei | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1979 References (not structured): Von Cosel et al 1982, Essink 1985, Gollasch et al. 2014 in WGITMO Report 2014 (and references therein) Comments: First record in Europe. In Europe, E. directus was first positively recorded on June 6, 1979, (German Bight, Elbe-Estuary, von Cosel, et al. 1982) which makes an arrival of larvae transferred with ballast water of vessels from the east coast of the USA likely in 1978 (Von Cosel, et al. 1982). However, a few small Ensis found on tidal flats in the Dutch Wadden Sea near Terschelling in 1977 may have referred to this species (Beukema & Dekker 1995). Swennen et al. (1985) also assume that the introduction of E. directus into Europe took place before 1978, but that the first strong year-class in Europe originated only in 1979. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Germany LME: 22. North Sea References (not structured): Christian Buschbaum, Dagmar Lackschewitz, Karsten Reise. 2012. Nonnative macrobenthos in the Wadden Sea ecosystem. Ocean & Coastal Management. 68, 89-101 Comments: Minsener Oog, Robbenplate, off Wangerooge Island as reported in: Rohde, S., A. Markert, P. Schupp, A. Wehrmann. 2015. Neobiota-Basislinie in niedersächsischen Küstengewässern. Bericht erstellt im Auftrag des NLWKN und NLPV. 80 p. |

Source region (?) | Country: USA --> LME: 7. Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf References (not structured): Von Cosel et al 1982, Essink 1985 |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Highly likely Pathway: Vessels Vector: (Highly likely) Ballast water References (not structured): Gollasch et al. 2014 in WGITMO Report 2014 (and references therein) Comments: Old formated values: Pathway - Ships; Vector - Unintentional |
Habitat type (?) | Estuary Open coast Port vicinity Ports Strait/Sound References (not structured): Buschbaum et al. 2012 |

Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered | |
Salinity range (?) | Venice system: 4. β-Mesohaline [5-10psu] 5. α-Mesohaline [10-18psu] 6. Polymixohaline [18-30psu] 7. Euhaline [30-40psu] References (not structured): Gollasch et al. 2014 in WGITMO Report 2014 (and references therein) |
|
Temperature range (?) | Min: 2 Max: 22 References (not structured): This is the minimum temperature range, Gollasch et al. 2014 in WGITMO Report 2014 (and references therein). The full temperature tolerance may be wider. Comments: Significant shell growth begins in the Wadden Sea late in a year with minimum water temperatures of 12 - 14°C (Witbaard et al 2013). Growth ceases at about 6°C and confirms that most growth occurs at temperatures above 14°C (Cardoso et al. 2013). The species shows a large annual temperature tolerances, but low winter temperatures seem to limit its development (Essink 1994). |
