Temperature range (?) | Min: 0 Max: 20 References (not structured): Hegele-Drywa J, Normant M. 2014. Non-native crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1984) – a new component of the benthic communities in the Gulfof Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). Oceanologia. 56 (1): 125-139. Comments: The temperature of southern Baltic surface waters varies from about 0 °C to more than 20 °C, while in the deep water zone, in winter, usually does not fall below 4 °C. |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic: Littoral (Benthic) Sublittoral beyond photic zone Sublittoral within photic zone Substratum: Artificial (manmade) Biogenic (living or nonliving) Hard (cobbles to bedrock) Soft (mud to pebbles) References (not structured): Hegele-Drywa J., Normant M., 2014. Non–native crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1894) – a new component of the benthic communities in the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). Oceanologia 56 (1), 1-15. |

Reproductive duration (?) | Medium References (not structured): Hegele-Drywa J, Normant M. 2014. Non-native crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1984) – a new component of the benthic communities in the Gulfof Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). Oceanologia. 56 (1): 125-139. Comments: One month after mating, the female lays about 4,000 eggs (0.3 mm in diameter). After 50 days of egg development, zoea larvae hatch. The juvenile stage is reached after four zoea and one megalopa stages. This process takes place over one month at a temperature of about 25 ° C, longer in lower temperatures. | |
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Jun. Jul. Aug. Sept. Oct. References (not structured): Turoboyski K., 1973. Biology and ecology of the crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii ssp. Tridentatus. Mar. Biol., 23 (4), 303–313. Hegele-Drywa J., Normant M., Szwarc B., Podłuska A., 2014. Population structure, morphometry and individual condition of non-native crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1984), a recent colonizer of the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). Migration pattern (?) | Not relevant References (not structured): Hegele-Drywa J, Thiercelin N, Schubart CD, Normant-Saremba M. 2015. Genetic diversity of the non-native crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Brachyura: Panopeidae) in Polish coastal waters – an example of patchy genetic diversity at a small geographic scale. Oceanological and Hydrobiological Studies 44 (3): 305-315. Comments: One of the characteristics of the reproductive process of this species is retention of the larvae, which is manifested in the fact that larvae remain close to the parent population after hatching. |
Population status (?) | Common (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): Hegele-Drywa J., Normant M., Szwarc B., Podłuska A., 2014. Comments: In the Gulf of Gdańsk (years 2006-2010) it was found in 69 out of 129 sampling stations between 2006-2010. Has established two centers: Puck Bay and Gdyna/Sopot area. In Vistula Lagoon (years 2006-2009) it was found in 7 out of 24 sampling stations. |
