AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Porcellidium ovatum
Date of the first record (?) | 1980 - 1984 References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1985) Crustacean records from Lough Hyne, Co Cork: Part III. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 8:19-25. Comments: The species was previously referredto as Porcellidium tenuicauda and P. viride but on re-examination were found to be P. ovatum from material collected during the period 1980-1984. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1991) Crustacean records from Lough Hyne (Ine) Co Cork Ireland: Part V. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 14: 73-84. Comments: Specimens were collected from Lough Hyne on the south-west coast of Ireland in light-traps set overnight. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown Comments: It is not known from where this species arrived. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1991) Crustacean records from Lough Hyne (Ine) Co Cork Ireland: Part V. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 14: 73-84. Comments: There are two suggestions as to how it arrived in Ireland, either with oysters or as hull fouling. In Lough Hyne specimens are frequent in the shallows associated with shells and stones and its association with oyster movements is indeed possible. Holmes (1991) suggests in may have arrived in association with hull fouling on vessels. |
Habitat type (?) | Sheltered coastal area References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1985) Crustacean records from Lough Hyne, Co Cork: Part III. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 8:19-25. Comments: Lough Hyne is a deep water saline lagoon connected to the sea by means of a long inlet (Barlogue Creek) There is a tidal ventilation of the Lough although a sill obstructs a normal tidal regime. |
|
Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered Comments: Only known from the sheltered localities within Lough Hyne in Ireland. |
|
Salinity range (?) | Not entered
Temperature range (?) | Not entered |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic and Pelagic: Littoral (Pelagic) Sublittoral within photic zone Substratum: Biogenic (living or nonliving) Hard (cobbles to bedrock) References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1991) Crustacean records from Lough Hyne (Ine) Co Cork Ireland: Part V. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 14: 73-84. Comments: Associated with the corallines encrusting shallow water stones and boulders. |
|
Reproductive duration (?) | Not entered
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Not entered
Migration pattern (?) | Not entered |
Population status (?) | Common (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1985) Crustacean records from Lough Hyne, Co Cork: Part III. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 8:19-25. Comments: The species has been recorded over a number of years and so is presumed to be established in Lough Hyne. |
|
Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References (not structured): Suarez-Morales E, de Troch M, Fiers F (2006) A checklist of the marine Harpacticoida (Copepoda) of the Caribbean Sea. Zootaxa 1285:1-19. Kito K (1977) Phytal Animals in the Sargassum confusum Region in Oshoro Bay, Hokkaido:Phenology of Harpacticoid Copepods. Zoologische Verhandelingen 64: 1-128. Comments: The species is known from the Bahamas and Japan. Por (1964) considers it to be a Mediterranean and Indo-west-Pacific species. |
