AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Pollicipes pollicipes
Date of the first record (?) | 1820 - 1856 References (not structured): Thompson W (1856) The Natural History of Ireland 4. Bohn, London. Comments: Date of finding is not recorded but will be before the published date |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Thompson W (1856) The Natural History of Ireland 4. Bohn, London. Comments: Found n a lock-gate at Ringsend, Dublin Port. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown Comments: Most probably continental Europe Atlantic coast of France, Spain or Portugal. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Not entered References (not structured): JNCC (2010) UK Priority Species data collection, Mitella pollicipes Version 2 updated on 15/12/2010 http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/_speciespages/2434.pdf Comments: Reported from south-west Cornwall on two occasions only. Thought to have arrived by drift to Cornwall. |
Habitat type (?) | Unknown
Wave exposure (?) | Exposed References (not structured): Borja A, Liria P, Muxika I, Bald J (2006) Relationships between wave exposure and biomass of the goose barnacle (Pollicipes pollicipes, Gmelin, 1790) in the Gaztelugatxe Marine Reserve (Basque Country, northern Spain) ICES Journal of Marine Science 63(4): 626-636. Comments: The species is well known to withstand heavy pounding by waves on shores. Its finding on a lock gate is unusual. |
|
Salinity range (?) | Unknown Comments: It occurs on exposed coasts with normal coastal salinities. At Ringsend the conditions would have been estuarine. |
|
Temperature range (?) | Not entered |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic and Pelagic: Littoral (Benthic) Littoral (Pelagic) Substratum: Artificial (manmade) Comments: Found on an artificial surface. |
|
Reproductive duration (?) | Not entered
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Apr. May Jun. Jul. Aug. Sept. References (not structured): Cardoso AC, Yule AB (1995) Aspects of the reproductive biology of Pollicipes pollicipes (Cirripedia: Lepadomorpha) from the southwest coast of Portugal. Netherlands Journal of Aquatic Ecology 29(3-4): 391-396. Comments: In southern Portugal fertilised eggs could be found from the late spring to the early autumn. Air temperatures exceeding 14C are needed during periods of productivity in order to create good breeding success. Such conditions already prevail in Irish waters and this species might at some future time become established. |
|
Migration pattern (?) | Not entered |
Population status (?) | Rare (single record) (Moderate level of certainty) Comments: The species is not known to be established in Irish waters there have been no records since. Unclear whether introduced or whether it was an opportunistic arrival from natural drifting of larval stages. |
|
Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References (not structured): Cardoso AC, Yule AB (1995) Aspects of the reproductive biology of Pollicipes pollicipes (Cirripedia: Lepadomorpha) from the southwest coast of Portugal. Netherlands Journal of Aquatic Ecology 29(3-4): 391-396. Comments: The species may extend its range, with altering climate, to the south coast of Ireland where conditions for reproduction may be favourable. |
