Species | Pileolaria berkeleyana | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1974 References (not structured): Knight-Jones, P., Knight-Jones, E.W., Thorp, C.H., & Gray, P.W.G. 1975. Immigrant spirorbids (Polychaeta: Sedentaria) on the Japanese Sargassum at Portsmouth, England.Zoologica Scripta, 4(4): 145-149. Comments: Collected during 1974. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: United Kingdom (Britain) LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: English Channel References (not structured): Knight-Jones, P., Knight-Jones, E.W., Thorp, C.H., & Gray, P.W.G. 1975. Immigrant spirorbids (Polychaeta: Sedentaria) on the Japanese Sargassum at Portsmouth, England.Zoologica Scripta, 4(4): 145-149. Source region (?) | Not entered References (not structured): Knight-Jones, P., Knight-Jones, E.W., Thorp, C.H., & Gray, P.W.G. 1975. Immigrant spirorbids (Polychaeta: Sedentaria) on the Japanese Sargassum at Portsmouth, England.Zoologica Scripta, 4(4): 145-149. Comments: Might have been from Japan or perhaps from continental Europe as secondary spread. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Natural spread from neighboring countries Pathway: Vessels References (not structured): Knight-Jones, P., Knight-Jones, E.W., Thorp, C.H., & Gray, P.W.G. 1975. Immigrant spirorbids (Polychaeta: Sedentaria) on the Japanese Sargassum at Portsmouth, England.Zoologica Scripta, 4(4): 145-149. Comments: While the species was found associated with Sargassum muticum it normally prefers firmer surfaces to attach to. It is considered that vessel hulls is a likely mode for their transmission. |

Immigrant spirorbids (Polychaeta: Sedentaria) on the Japanese Sargassum at Portsmouth, England.Zoologica Scripta, 4(4): 145-149. Comments: Known to occur in Falmouth, in Cornwall, in Plymouth in DEvon and Portsmouth in Hampshire on the south and south-west coast of Britain. A specimen was found at St Helier, Jersey. The species may be expected to spread to other British regions. It should be noted that P. berkeleyana may become distinguished from P. rosepigmentata in which case the British specimens are likely to carry this last name. |
