Species | Myicola ostreae | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1993 References (not structured): Holmes JMC, Minchin D (1995) Two exotic copepods imported into Ireland with the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg). Irish Naturalists’ Journal 25: 17-20. Comments: Imported to Ireland in January 1993 with half-grown Pacific oysters. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Holmes JMC, Minchin D (1995) Two exotic copepods imported into Ireland with the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg). Irish Naturalists’ Journal 25: 17-20. Comments: Introduced to Carlingford Lough and Dungarvan Bay on the east and south coasts of Ireland. |

Source region (?) | Country: France --> LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf; LME sub-region: Biscay Gulf --> LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf; LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Holmes JMC, Minchin D (1995) Two exotic copepods imported into Ireland with the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg). Irish Naturalists’ Journal 25: 17-20. Comments: Introduced initially from Marennes-Oleron region of the west coast of France. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Direct evidence Pathway: Culture activities Vector: Regional stock movement References (not structured): Holmes JMC, Minchin D (1995) Two exotic copepods imported into Ireland with the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg). Irish Naturalists’ Journal 25: 17-20. Comments: Consignments of half-grown oysters were introduced from the west coast of France to Ireland. |

Population status (?) | Unknown (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Holmes JMC, Minchin D (1995) Two exotic copepods imported into Ireland with the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg). Irish Naturalists’ Journal 25: 17-20. Comments: There have been no recent records of the species although it was present for some years in Pacific oysters from 1993 to 1999. Where the copepod appeared they were either attached or lying over the gills of Pacific oysters. When attached each produced a small light oval patch on the gill surface. |

Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Ho JS, Kim IH (1991) Copepod parasites of commercial bivalves in Korea. II. Copepods from cultured bivalves. Bulletin of the Korean Fisheries Society 24: 369-396. Ho JS. 1992. Phylogenetic analysis of the Myicolidae, a family of poecilostomecopepods chiefly parasitic in marine bivalve mollusks. Acta Zoologica Taiwanica 3: 67-77. Comments: The species is native to the north-west Pacific region and was originally almost certainly introduced with consignments of Pacific oysters flown to France. The species in its native range is associated with the bivalves Crassostrea gigas and Sinonovacula constricta. |
