AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Megabalanus tintinnabulum | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1830 - 1843 References (not structured): O'Riordan CE (1969) A catalogue of the collection of Irish marine crustacean. Stationary Office, Dublin, 98pp. Thompson W (1844)Report on the fauna of Ireland, Division Invertebrata. R & JE Taylor, London. Comments: Recorded by Thompson (1844) and stated to be associated with drftwood (in Howth, east coast of Ireland) attached to the shell of Aequipecten opercularis (in Dublin Bay) and from the hulls of vessels (in Cork Harbour). Further in 1915 fourteen specimens were presented to the National Museum of Ireland that were from a lightship either from the Wexford or the Cork coast. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): O'Riordan CE (1967) A catalogue of the collection of Irish marine crustacean. Stationary Office, Dublin, 98pp. Comments: The first records were probably from Howth or Dublin Bay |

Source region (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Quigley DTG, Flannery K (1997) A record of the barnacle Balanus tintinnabulum L. (Crustacea: Cirripedia from Irish waters 25(11-12): 459-460. O'Riordan CE (1967) A catalogue of the collection of Irish marine crustacean. Stationary Office, Dublin, 98pp. Comments: The source region is unknown, but perhaps some larvae drift into Irish waters from time to time and settle. It would seem unusual for this tropical barnacle to be found under Irish conditions. The numbers on the the lightship might suggest some local recruitment. There has been only one recent accounts of this species occurring in Irish waters. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Highly likely Pathway: Vessels Vector: (Highly likely) Ship’s hull References (not structured): O'Riordan CE (1967) A catalogue of the collection of Irish marine crustacean. Stationary Office, Dublin, 98pp. Comments: Although removed from the hull of a light vessel it may have naturally spread as larvae to Irish waters or as a result of larval release from fouled vessels. |

Population status (?) | Rare (single record) (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): O'Riordan CE (1967) A catalogue of the collection of Irish marine crustacean. Stationary Office, Dublin, 98pp. Quigley DTG, Flannery K (1997) A record of the barnacle Balanus tintinnabulum L. (Crustacea: Cirripedia from Irish waters 25(11-12): 459-460. Comments: A single record of fourteen specimens during the early 20th Century. The later record is from the hull of a vessel on the south coast. It is unclear whether occasional recruitment takes place along south coast of Ireland. |

Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Kerckhof F and Cattrijsse A (2001) Exotic Cirripedia (Balanomorpha) from buoys off the Belgian coast. Senckenbergiana marit 31: 245-254. Comments: Found on some offshore bouys off the Belgian coast. Specimens occasionally become washed ashore on the Dutch and Belgian coasts. The species occurs in semi-tropical and tropical environments. |
