AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Hydroides dianthus | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1970 References (not structured): Zibrowius H (1978) Introduction du Polychete Serpulidae japonais Hydroides ezoensis sur la cote atlantique francaise et remarques sur la repartition d'autres especes de Serpulidae. Tethys 8(2): 141-150. Comments: First located in 1970. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: United Kingdom (Britain) LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: English Channel References (not structured): Zibrowius H (1978) Introduction du Polychete Serpulidae japonais Hydroides ezoensis sur la cote atlantique francaise et remarques sur la repartition d'autres especes de Serpulidae. Tethys 8(2): 141-150. Comments: First found on the Hamble Spit in Southampton Water on the south coast of Britain. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Zibrowius H. Thorp CH. 1989. A review of the alien serpulid and spirorbid polychaetes in the British Isles. Cahiers de Biologie Marine 30: 271-285. Comments: It is unclear whether the species originated from the North-west Atlantic or whether it was an introduction from France where it is already known for ~75 years or from further south, perhaps even the Mediterranean where the species will have been introduced >100 years ago. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Culture activities Pathway: Vessels References (not structured): Zibrowius H (1971) Les especes mediterraneennes du genre Hydroides (Polychaeta Serpulidae). Remarques sur le pretend polymorphisme de Hydroides uncinata. Tethys 2(3): 691-745. Comments: It is located in the Southampton Dock area implying that vessels may be responsible for its transmission. Zibrowius believed that it was introduced to Europe by this means. But its arrival might also have been with the movements of oyster consignments arising from the large movements of half-grown American oysters from Long Island Sound to Britain. |

Reproductive seasonality (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Zibrowius H. Thorp CH. 1989. A review of the alien serpulid and spirorbid polychaetes in the British Isles. Cahiers de Biologie Marine 30: 271-285. Comments: The species is thought to be capable of reproducing in British waters. |
|
Migration pattern (?) | Not entered |
Population status (?) | Unknown (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Thorp CH, Pyne S, West SA (1987) Hydroides ezoensis Okuda, a fouling serpulid new to British coastal waters. Journal of Natural History 21: 863-877. Zibrowius H. Thorp CH. 1989. A review of the alien serpulid and spirorbid polychaetes in the British Isles. Cahiers de Biologie Marine 30: 271-285 Comments: Small numbers of this species were obtained in Southampton Docks by Thorp and colleagues in the course of finding a separate species H. ezoensis. H. dianthus has the ability to reproduce in British waters according to Zibrowius and may be more frequent than is currently known. The species may be established in Britain but no subsequent studies are known. |

Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Zibrowius H (1971) Les especes mediterraneennes du genre Hydroides (Polychaeta Serpulidae). Remarques sur le pretend polymorphisme de Hydroides uncinata. Tethys 2(3): 691-745. Zibrowius H. Thorp CH. 1989. A review of the alien serpulid and spirorbid polychaetes in the British Isles. Cahiers de Biologie Marine 30: 271-285 Comments: The species has a range from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico. |
