Species | Gracilaria multipartita | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1977 References (not structured): Ottway B (1979) Gracilaria foliifera an alga new to Ireland. Irish Naturalists' Journal 19: 327. Comments: Found as female drift plants in 1977. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Ottway B (1979) Gracilaria foliifera an alga new to Ireland. Irish Naturalists' Journal 19: 327. Guiry MD, Ottway (1981) Mariculture studies of Gracilaria foliifera, an agar producing seaweed. Proc. econ. med. Plants Res. Assoc. 3: 85-89. Comments: First found in a lobster pond at Cleggan in Co Galway. The fresh plants were cultivated in a special study to evaluate the species for agar production. |

Source region (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Guiry MD, Guiry GM (2013) AlgaeBase. World-wide electronic publication, National University of Ireland, Galway. http://www.algaebase.org; searched on 22 October 2013. Comments: The species may have arrived as drift plants to the south and west of Ireland. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Unknown Comments: It is unclear what might be the other modes of dispersal for this species as it is not found to-date close to aquaculture activities, marinas or ports. |

Maricultural studies on Gracilaria foliifera, an agar producing seaweed. In Proceedings of the Third Economic and Medicinal Plants Research Association Symposium. University Botanic Gardens, Cambridge (pp. 85-95)Dixon PS, Irvine LM (1977) Seaweeds of the British Isles. Volume 1 Rhodophyta Part 1. British Museum of Natural History, London. Comments: Following the find in Cleggan in 1977 it was found in 1981 in Ventry stranded on the shore following a storm. Specimens were collected in the following year. It would appear that the species is established and may be more common than the current records would suggest. The origin of the fixed specimens is unclear. On the south-west coast of Britain plants are found to a depth of 15m. |

Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References (not structured): Guiry MD, Guiry GM (2013) AlgaeBase. World-wide electronic publication, National University of Ireland, Galway. http://www.algaebase.org; searched on 13 October 2013. Comments: It would appear that this species has a southern range on the eastern Atlantic coast being found on the west coast of Africa and the Iberian peninsula and also known from the Mediterranean Sea. |
