A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Comments: Collected from within a temporary lagoon at Cuckmere Haven, Sussex. |

Source region (?) | Not entered References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Culture activities Pathway: Vessels References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Comments: The species is often found associated with algae in shallow water. Edwards considers that it is the polyp stage that may be moved. He was uncertain about its transport with vessels, however, the small medusa stage might survive in ships' ballast water. More likely is it dispersal with consignments of oysters. It arrival in Britian might have been with consignments of American oysters arriving as part of trade to Britain from the 1870s. |

Population status (?) | Unknown (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Russell FS (1970) The medusa of the British Isles II. Pelagic Scyphozoa, with a supplement to the first volume on Hydromedusae. Cambridge University Press 284pp. Comments: Sporadically appearing on the east coast of Britain and often in aquarium or other tanks, most probably because they become more easily recognised under these circumstances. Its overall status is not clear there being no known recent records of the species. |
