Species | Gonionemus vertens | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1924 References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Comments: Found as the medusa stage in the tanks at Port Erin in 1924. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: United Kingdom (Britain) LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas Country area: Channel Islands References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Comments: The Port Erin Marine Laboratory was a centre of learning and many specialised studies on different taxonomic groups took place at this site. The finding of this medusa in aquaria is frequently how this species becomes recognised. |

Source region (?) | Not entered References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Comments: Unknown as the species was widely distributed being found in many aquaria with water drawn from shallow water. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Not entered References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Comments: The species is often found associated with algae in shallow water. Edwards considers that it is the polyp stage that may be moved. He was uncertain about its transport with vessels, however, the small medusa stage might survive in ships' ballast water. More likely is it dispersal with consignments of oysters. It arrival in Britian might have been with consignments of American oysters arriving as part of trade to Britain from the 1870s. |

Population status (?) | Established (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Edwards C. 1976. A study in erratic distribution: the occurrence of the medusa Gonionemus in relation to the distribution of oysters. Advances in Marine Biology 14: 251-284. Russell FS (1970) The medusa of the British Isles II. Pelagic Scyphozoa, with a supplement to the first volume on Hydromedusae. Cambridge University Press 284pp. Comments: Sporadically appearing in aquarium or other tanks, most probably because they become more easily recognised under these circumstances. Its overall status is not clear there being no known recent records of the species but its widespread distribution would suggest that it is established. |
