AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Gammarus tigrinus
Date of the first record (?) | 1916 - 1960 References (not structured): Costello MJ (1993) Biogeography of alien amphipods occurring in Ireland and interactions with native species. Crustaceana 65: 287-299. Sexton EW (1939) On a species of Gammarus (G. tigrinus) from Droitwich district. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 23: 543-551. Nijessen H, Stock JH (1966) The amphipod Gammarus tigrinus Sexton, 1939, introduced to The Netherlands (Crustacea). Beaufortia 13: 97-206. Comments: It has been suggested that it might have been introduced to the North of Ireland during the World War I. It was described from Britain in 1939 but was almost certainly present before this time. It is unclear what the movement of this species was before this date although, what may have been this species, was responsible for damaging the natural fibre of fishing nest in Lough Neagh. In 1960 it was introduced to The Netherlands so most probably will have been present before this time. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas Comments: It might have been introduced to the North of Ireland to the River Bann. Its distribution reported by Costello (1993) indicate an introduction to the Northern region of Ireland. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Costello MJ (1993) Biogeography of alien amphipods occurring in Ireland and interactions with native species. Crustaceana 65: 287-299. Comments: Although a North American species it is unclear whether the species was introduced in the ballast water of military vessels arriving to the Bann Estuary or whether there was an inoculation directly from Britain. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Costello MJ (1993) Biogeography of alien amphipods occurring in Ireland and interactions with native species. Crustaceana 65: 287-299. Strange CD, Glass GB (1979) The distribution of freshwater gammarids in Northern Ireland. Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy 79B: 145-153. Sexton, E.W. (1939) On a species of Gammarus (G. tigrinus) from Droitwich district. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 23: 543-551. Comments: It has been suggested that the species will have been introduced to the northern coast of Ireland during World War I released to the River Bann (below the town of Coleraine) from bilge water (ballast water was probably meant) and that it extended its range having entered Lough Neagh to Belfast by canal and subsequently transmitted to to Britain where Sexton later found it and described the species. |

Salinity range (?) | Venice system: 1. Limnetic [<0.5psu] 2. β-Oligohaline [0.5-3psu] 3. α-Oligohaline [3-5psu] References (not structured): Minchin D, Jazdzewski K, Anderson R (2013) Further range expansions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Irish Naturalists' Journal 32(1): 13-18. Comments: It can tolerate low levels of salinity but has become invasive in inland waters. |
|
Temperature range (?) | Not entered |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic: Littoral (Benthic) Sublittoral beyond photic zone Sublittoral within photic zone Substratum: Artificial (manmade) Biogenic (living or nonliving) Hard (cobbles to bedrock) Soft (mud to pebbles) References (not structured): Minchin D, Jazdzewski K, Anderson R (2013) Further range extensions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Irish Naturalists Journal 32(1): 13-18. Comments: The species is widely distributed mainly within Irish lakes and rivers. |
|
Reproductive duration (?) | Not entered
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Not entered
Migration pattern (?) | Not entered |
Population status (?) | Common (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): Minchin D, Jazdzewski K, Anderson R (2013) Further range extensions of two North American amphipods in Ireland. Irish Naturalists Journal 32(1): 13-18. O’Grady MF, Holmes JMC (1983) A new Irish locality for Gammarus tigrinus Sexton. Irish Naturalists’ Journal 21(1): 44. Comments: The species has incrementally expanded its range in Ireland, having been confined to Northern Ireland and then found at isolated localities. It was commonly obtained in traps in the Shannon River system and is now common there. |

Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Sexton EW (1939) On a species of Gammarus (G. tigrinus) from Droitwich district. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 23: 543-551. Comments: The species is native to North America. |
