AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Coscinodiscus wailesii | |
Date of the first record (?) | 1979 References (not structured): Edwards M, John AWG, Johns DG and Reid PC (2001) Case history and persistence of the non-indigenous diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii in the north-east Atlantic. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 81: 207-211. Boalch GT, Harbour DS (1977) Unusual diatom off the coast of south-west England and its effect on fishing. Nature 269: 687-688. Comments: Occurred in the St Georges Channel in 1979 having earlier been reported in the west English Channel. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Edwards M, John AWG, Johns DG, Reid PC (2001) Case history and persistence of the non-indigenous diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii in the north-east Atlantic. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 81: 207-211. Comments: It was found in the St Georges Channel. |

Source region (?) | Country: United Kingdom (Britain) --> LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf; LME sub-region: Celtic seas --> LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf; LME sub-region: English Channel References (not structured): Boalch GT, Harbour DS (1977) Unusual diatom off the coast of south-west England and its effect on fishing. Nature, 269: 687-688. Comments: Sufficiently abundant so as to be a nuisance to the fishing using nets as a result of mucilage production. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Highly likely Pathway: Natural spread from neighboring countries Vector: (Highly likely) Water currents References (not structured): Edwards M, John AWG, Johns DG, Reid PC (2001) Case history and persistence of the non-indigenous diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii in the north-east Atlantic. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 81: 207-211. Comments: Most probably arrived within the southern Irish Sea as a result of longshore drift. |

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 81: 207-211. Comments: Blooms of this species form offshore. |

Population status (?) | Very abundant (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): Boalch GT, Harbour DS (1977) Unusual diatom off the coast of south-west England and its effect on fishing. Nature 269: 687-688. Edwards M, John AWG, Johns DG, Reid PC (2001) Case history and persistence of the non-indigenous diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii in the north-east Atlantic. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 81: 207-211. Guiry, M.D. & Guiry, G.M. 2013. AlgaeBase. World-wide electronic publication, National University of Ireland, Galway. http://www.algaebase.org; searched on 22 October 2013 Golding, N, Vincent, M A, and Connor, D W 2004. Irish Sea Pilot - Report on the development of a Marine Landscape classification for the Irish Sea. JNCC.Appendix III: SAHFOS/Irish Sea Pilot – Plankton Communities initial report 98-109. Comments: Very abundant when forming blooms. It has been recorded in Bantry Bay by R. Raine who has a picture of the species in AlgaeBase. A concentration was observed off the Wicklow coast identified by means of a continuous plankton recorder. |

Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References (not structured): Gomez F (2008) Phtytoplankton invasions: comments on the validity of categorizing the non-indigenous dinoflagellates and diatoms in European seas. Marine Pollution Bulletin 56: 620-628. Gittenberger A, Rensing M, Stegenga H, Hoeksema B (2010) Native and non-native species of hard substrata in the Dutch Wadden Sea. Nederlandse faunistische Mededelingen No. 33: 21-75. Comments: Its status is unclear, while it has the features of an invasion, Gomez (2008) has suggested that the species was originally present and misidentified initially as C. nobilis, and further that it was due to climatic conditions that it made its appearance in 1977 to 1990. Gittenberger and others consider it to be a North Pacific species. |
