AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Cordylophora caspia
Date of the first record (?) | To 1844 References (not structured): Thompson W (1844) Report on the fauna of Ireland: invertebrata. British Association for the Advancement of Science. Richard and John E Taylor, London 245-291. Comments: First recorded as C. lacustris close to Dublin. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Thompson W (1844) Report on the fauna of Ireland: invertebrata. British Association for the Advancement of Science. Richard and John E Taylor, London 245-291. Minchin, D., and Nunn, J. D. 2013. Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland Environment Agency Research and Development Series No. 13/06. Comments: recorded in freshwater to brackish conditions mainly within in estuaries and lagoons. Found to be abundant in the Foyle Estuary and in the lower part of the River Bann below Coleraine. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown Comments: Almost certainly will have arrived from Northern Europe but it is unclear whether this is the case. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Aquarium trade Pathway: Natural spread from neighboring countries References (not structured): Thompson W (1844) Report on the fauna of Ireland: invertebrata. British Association for the Advancement of Science. Richard and John E Taylor, London 245-291. Comments: It is unclear how this species will have arrived in Ireland. It could have been as a result of natural spread or perhaps an introduction with ornamental plants. |
Habitat type (?) | Estuary Lagoon Marina Ports References (not structured): Oliver GA Healy B (1998) Records of aquatic fauna from coastal lagoons in Ireland. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 21: 66-115. Minchin, D., and Nunn, J. D. 2013. Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland Environment Agency Research and Development Series No. 13/06. Healy B (1998) Survey of Irish coastal lagoons 1996 and 1998. background, description and summary. Duchas, Dublin, 117pp. Folino-Rorem NC, Darling JA, D'Ausilio CA (2009) Genetic analysis revelas multiple cryptic invasive species of the hydrozoan genus Cordylophora. Biological Invasions 11:1869-1882. Comments: Found attached to firm surfaces, such as floating pontoons and fenders but also known from aggrigates and macrophytes. |
|
Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: All populations are located in areas that are relatively sheltered being within estuaries or lagoons. |
|
Salinity range (?) | Venice system: 2. β-Oligohaline [0.5-3psu] 3. α-Oligohaline [3-5psu] 4. β-Mesohaline [5-10psu] References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: Salinities are as measured during a 2012 survey in Northern Ireland |
|
Temperature range (?) | Not entered |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic: Sublittoral within photic zone Substratum: Artificial (manmade) Biogenic (living or nonliving) Hard (cobbles to bedrock) References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Comments: Found attached to fenders in the brackish zone of the Foyle River in Derry in 2012 and in the Bann Estuary where locally it is abundant. |
|
Reproductive duration (?) | Not entered
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Not entered
Migration pattern (?) | Not entered |
Population status (?) | Abundant (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Folino-Rorem NC, Darling JA, D'Ausilio CA (2009) Genetic analysis reveals multiple cryptic invasive species of the hydrozoan genus Cordylophora. Biological Invasions 11: 1869-1882. Comments: Locally abundant in the Lagoons: Durnesh, Kincas,Inch and Blanket Nook in Co Donegal, from Rostellan Lough in Cork Harbour and in Shannon, Foyle and Bann estuaries. There are cryptic forms of the same genus according to recent genetic studies. The clade in the Shannon River Estuary is similar to those populations examined in France, Germany and an eastern North American population. The arrival in Ireland before 1844, at a time when there was trade with Europe as sailing vessels implies that a natural mechanism of spread may have been involved in its appearance in Ireland. |
|
Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References (not structured): Bij de Vaate A, Jazdzewski K, Ketelaars HAM, Gollasch S. Van der Velde G (2002)Geographical patterns in the range extension of Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrate species in Europe. Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences 59(7): 1159-1174. Comments: Presumed to be of ponto-caspian origin having spread to much of Europe through the canal system. |
