AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Caligus pageti
Date of the first record (?) | 1986 References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1998) A checklist of the Siphonostomatoida (Crustacea: Copepoda) of Ireland. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 22: 194-228. Comments: The species was ectoparasitic on the grey mullet Chelon labrosus in 1986. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Russell FS (1925) A new species of Caligus from Egypt, Caligus pageti sp. n. Annals and Magazine of Natural History (9)15:611-618, pls. 33-35. Comments: The first records were from Furnace Lough, and were originally described as Caligus curtis. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown References (not structured): Minchin D (2007) A checklist of alien and cryptogenic aquatic species in Ireland. Aquatic Invasions 2(4): 341-366. Comments: The species is reported from the Mediterranean Sea and one locality on the coast of France. It is uncertain whether the species was introduced or not. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Possible Pathway: Vessels Vector: Ballast water Comments: It is possible that the caligid species was introduced in ballast water on vessels involved in the cattle trade returning from the Mediterranean Sea. |
Habitat type (?) | Estuary References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1998) A checklist of the Siphonostomatoida (Crustacea: Copepoda) of Ireland. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 22: 194-228. Comments: The species is associated with mullet, which in summer are frequent in the shallows of estuaries. |
|
Wave exposure (?) | Not entered
Salinity range (?) | Unknown Comments: The ectoparasite is found in brackish to marine conditions. |
|
Temperature range (?) | Not entered |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Not entered
Reproductive duration (?) | Not entered
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Not entered
Migration pattern (?) | Not entered |
Population status (?) | Unknown (Low level of certainty) References (not structured): Holmes JMC (1998) A checklist of the Siphonostomatoida (Crustacea: Copepoda) of Ireland. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society 22: 194-228. Comments: This caligid ectoparasite was also found in Courtmacsherry Bay and off Helvick Head in August 1995 all associated with Chelon labrosus. It has also been recovered in a light-trap from Carnac, France. |
|
Species status (?) | Cryptogenic References (not structured): Kennedy M, Fitzmaurice P (1969) Age and growth of thick.lipped grey mullet Crenimugil labrosus in Irish waters. Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. 49: 683-699. Comments: The species was described first from Egypt and infests mullet species. It is unclear whether this might be a natural range extension to Ireland. However, the Irish population of mullet do not migrate into northern European continental waters and so it is unclear whether the pelagic stages could drift to Irish waters. In the Mediterranean it is associated with Chelon cephalis and Liza species. |
