AquaNISInformation system on aquatic non-indigenous and cryptogenic species |
Species | Bugula neritina
Date of the first record (?) | To 2006 References (not structured): Ryland JS, Bishop JDD, De Blauwe H, El Nagar A, Minchin D, Wood C, Yunnie ALE (2011) Alien species of Bugula (Bryozoa) along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Aquatic Invasions 6(1): 17-31. Comments: First recorded was from the Malahide Marina in January 2006, so it would have been present there in 2005. Locally abundant in Carlingford and Carrickfergus in 2012. There are two colour forms present purple and the not as frequent brown form. |
Recipient region (?) | Country: Ireland LME: 24. Celtic-Biscay Shelf LME sub-region: Celtic seas References (not structured): Ryland JS, Bishop JDD, De Blauwe H, El Nagar A, Minchin D, Wood C, Yunnie ALE (2011) Alien species of Bugula (Bryozoa) along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Aquatic Invasions 6(1): 17-31. Porter JS, Nunn JD, Ryland JS, Minchin D, Spencer Jones ME (2017) The status of non-native bryozoans on the north coast of Ireland. BioInvasion Records 6(4): 321-330. Comments: Following the finding in Malahide Marina it was then located in Carlingford Marina and more recently in Carrigfergus Marina in 2012. |
|
Source region (?) | Unknown Comments: The source of the Irish populations remains unknown but it is almost certainly from a separate region in Europe as the introduction was almost certainly with leisure craft. |
Pathway / Vector (?) | Level of certainty: Direct evidence Pathway: Vessels Vector: Ship’s hull References (not structured): Minchin D (2007) Rapid coastal survey for targeted alien species associated with floating pontoons in Ireland. Aquatic Invasions 2(1): 63-70. Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Mackie, J.A., Keough, M.J. and Christidis, L. 2006. Invasion patterns inferred from cytochrome oxidase I sequences in three bryozoans, Bugula neritina, Watersipora subtorquata, and Watersipora arcuata, Marine Biology 149: 285–295 Porter JS, Nunn JD, Ryland JS, Minchin D, Spencer Jones ME (2017) The status of non-native bryozoans on the north coast of Ireland. BioInvasion Records 6(4): 321-330. Comments: In recent studies the species has been seen attached to the hulls of leisure craft along the hull waterline. It has also been seen attached to hulls in Portugal and Spain. |
Habitat type (?) | Marina References (not structured): Ryland JS, Bishop JDD, De Blauwe H, El Nagar A, Minchin D, Wood C, Yunnie ALE (2011) Alien species of Bugula (Bryozoa) along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Aquatic Invasions 6(1): 17-31. Porter JS, Nunn JD, Ryland JS, Minchin D, Spencer Jones ME (2017) The status of non-native bryozoans on the north coast of Ireland. BioInvasion Records 6(4): 321-330. Comments: Found attached to leisure craft hulls, floating pontoons close to the surface and on the underside of boat fenders. |
|
Wave exposure (?) | Sheltered References (not structured): Ryland JS, Bishop JDD, De Blauwe H, El Nagar A, Minchin D, Wood C, Yunnie ALE (2011) Alien species of Bugula (Bryozoa) along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Aquatic Invasions 6(1): 17-31. Comments: The species has not, to-date, been seen outside of marina sites. |
|
Salinity range (?) | Venice system: 6. Polymixohaline [18-30psu] 7. Euhaline [30-40psu] Comments: Found in Malahide Marina but following a purse arising from a deluge of rain in the adjacent lagoon only withered specimens that were moribund were found, so indicating an intolerance to reduced salinity. It is unclear what the psu levels were that resulted in this. |
|
Temperature range (?) | Unknown Comments: Not measured at these sites |
Zonation / Substratum (?) | Benthic: Sublittoral within photic zone Substratum: Artificial (manmade) Biogenic (living or nonliving) References (not structured): Ryland JS, Bishop JDD, De Blauwe H, El Nagar A, Minchin D, Wood C, Yunnie ALE (2011) Alien species of Bugula (Bryozoa) along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Aquatic Invasions 6(1): 17-31. Comments: Mainly attaching to artificial surfaces but also noted attached to kelp. |
|
Reproductive duration (?) | Not entered
Reproductive seasonality (?) | Not entered
Migration pattern (?) | Not entered |
Population status (?) | Common (Moderate level of certainty) References (not structured): Minchin D (2007) Rapid coastal survey for targeted alien species associated with floating pontoons in Ireland. Aquatic Invasions 2(1): 63-70. Minchin D, Nunn J (2013) Rapid assessment of marinas for invasive alien species in Northern Ireland. A report undertaken for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Belfast. 96pp. Porter JS, Nunn JD, Ryland JS, Minchin D, Spencer Jones ME (2017) The status of non-native bryozoans on the north coast of Ireland. BioInvasion Records 6(4): 321-330. Comments: It is locally abundant at some marina sites forming bushy growths. Two colour morphs are present in Ireland a purple (a more usual form) and a brown form. |

Species status (?) | Non-indigenous species References (not structured): Ryland JS, Bishop JDD, De Blauwe H, El Nagar A, Minchin D, Wood C, Yunnie ALE (2011) Alien species of Bugula (Bryozoa) along the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Aquatic Invasions 6(1): 17-31. McGovern, T. and Hellberg, M. E. 2003. Cryptic species, cryptic endosymbionts, and geographic variation in chemical defenses in the bryozoan Bugula neritina. Molecular Ecology 12: 1207-1215. Davidson, S. K. and Haygood, M. G. 1999. Identification of sibling species of the bryozoan Bugula neritina that produce different anticancer bryostatins and harbour distinct strains of the bacterial symbiont "Candidatus Endobugula sertula". Biological Bulletin 196: 273-280 Comments: Recently expanding in European waters. There are cryptic species occurring in California (Davidson and Haygood, 1999) and the north-eastern USA (McGovern and Hellberg, 2003). It is likely that the current status of the species in Europe will be resolved in the near future. |
